Making a Living From Guinea Pigs

Today I just wanted to share a story I read online at ITV News about Laura, who quit her full-time job because she makes a full-time living off of her 5 guinea pigs. It reminded me how lucky we are to live in today’s society where we can earn a living without having to invest in our own factory or start our own brick-and-mortar business.

The Internet offers anyone a chance to log on and earn money. Laura’s story inspired me, so I just wanted to take a minute to share it with you.

You can read the original story at

Laura Mellors was a 29-year-old account manager who started making videos of her pet guinea pigs in 2010. They became a hit, and she currently has over 54,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel. She also set up her own online guinea pig store where she sells guinea pig products.

She currently earns about 2,000 pounds a month from her YouTube guinea pig videos and her online shop. That equates to about $3072.00 per month in U.S. Dollars.

Laura isn’t the only one to profit from YouTube videos about guinea pigs, however. A Comedy Duo on YouTube known as Smosh has made a name for themselves with a guinea pig. Their video titled “Charlie the Drunk Guinea Pig” has over 13.5 million views. YouTube ad revenue varies, but generally ranges from $1.50 – $5.00 per 1000 views. So, at the low end, 13.5 million views is worth about $20,250.00, while at the high end ($5.00/thousand views), that’s worth about $67,500.00. And that’s one video!

What video can you make today to get started on YouTube? Of course, not every video is going to get a lot of views, but if you keep uploading videos and pay attention to what does well and what doesn’t, you will be on your way to getting subscribers, views, and ad revenue. So pick up your camcorder or smartphone and share your thoughts with the world. Who knows? Someday it just might replace your income!
